WELCOME!
Mechanical Engineering has been part of the foundations of our university dating back to 1824 when the Manchester Mechanics Institute was founded - which later became The University of Manchester - to train engineers for the textile industry that was rapidly growing in Manchester.
Osborne Renolds was a professor in the department in the 1920s, pioneering the field of fluid mechanics and developing theories which are now taught in universities around the world.
The excellence in engineering has continued in Manchester since, with our graduates being sought after by leading global companies, making our department an excellent choice for study.
Working together with Aerospace Engineering, our department is one of the largest in Europe, with 200 years of expertise in the teaching of engineering and exceptional links to industry.
