CHEMISTRY IS FOR YOU IF...
Bringing in all of the natural sciences, the ability of chemists to manipulate atoms and molecules into complex shapes gives chemistry an artistic aspect almost unique among the sciences. Ask any of our professors and they will tell you it's not so much what you know, it's about the way you think - and this often surprises our students to-be! Take a look at this list below and see if any of these focus areas sound like you, if so this subject could make a very good match.
1. YOU WANT TO CREATE
Chemistry is a very creative subject, whether it’s synthesising a new molecule or applying your knowledge to a new challenge. From a nanoscale to large scale industrial processes, your creativity can shape the world around you.
2. YOU'RE A PROBLEM SOLVER
This is a subject with problem solving at its core- all scientists must come to terms with the Chemistry that exists in the real world and understand how scientific laws interact, sometimes in unintuitive ways.

“Chemistry is the way we understand the impact of things on the environment as well as how to make things better for the future"
3. YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW IT ALL WORKS
As a core science, Chemistry is the bridge that connects all the other natural sciences (Biology, Physics and much more!). If you want to be able to explain the physical properties of materials, or the laws that govern matter's constant change then you might be a Chemist.
4. EMPLOYABILITY IS A PRIORITY
You're in luck. The University of Manchester is the one of the most sought-after universities by the UK's Top Graduate Employers (High Fliers, The Graduate Market in 2024).
On average our graduates earn £28,700 within 15-months (Graduate Survey, 2021).

“There is nothing better than having solved a difficult question; and I think the exciting thing about chemistry is the intrinsic problem solving element."

“People can underestimate the amount of chemistry they encounter in day to day life. Petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, processed foods, fertilisers, plastics - the development of all of these are reliant on chemistry"
5. YOU WANT TO WORK WITH OTHERS
Chemists aren’t just stuck in the lab, they are always collaborating! Whether its working together to solve problems with friends. Peer assisted study sessions, or with our Chemistry society you’ll connect with students in the same position as you.
