Receive thorough, professional training with the MSc Statistics, which will prepare you to embark on statistical careers in a variety of areas.

There is a shortage of statisticians trained to postgraduate level in the UK, meaning that you'll be a highly desired candidate upon completion.

With a strong theoretical foundation, the course also emphasises the development of practical skills which will enable you to excel in industry and research.

The MSc Statistics course at the University of Manchester has a rich history, dating back to the 1960s. It is designed for individuals with a strong quantitative background who are aiming to pursue careers as statisticians, data analysts, or researchers across various sectors, including finance, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and government agencies.

You'll undertake a core of six course units as well as two specialist units, depending on your interests and career aspirations. Course units include Bayesian statistics, generalised linear models and survival analysis, longitudinal and spatial data analysis, linear models with nonparametric regression, multivariate statistics, statistical machine learning, and more.

Our small cohort size ensures that all students receive close interaction with academic staff and experience a truly collaborative learning environment.

WHAT CAREER PATHWAYS ARE AVAILABLE TO ME?

The course provides a strong foundation for careers in finance, healthcare, academia, and technology, equipping graduates with the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to excel in their chosen fields.

Students gain hands-on experience using popular programming languages such as R and Python, which are highly valued by employers in today's data-driven industries.

Additionally, many graduates pursue doctoral-level study, continuing their academic and professional development in statistics and related disciplines. You'll be well prepared with the strong analytical and problem-solving skills needed to excel in further research.

Our recent graduates have gone to work for companies including:

  • Hellenic Bank
  • Micro-Pensions Systems
  • Simmondley Dental Practice
  • App Annie
  • and many more!

and have gone into roles such as:

  • Biostatistician
  • Data Analyst
  • Project Manager

OUR STUDENT'S MSc PROJECTS

The MSc project is one of the most exciting parts of a master’s degree — you are paired with an expert supervisor and get a chance to dive deep into a topic you’re passionate about, solve real-world problems, and bring your ideas to life. It’s where everything you’ve learned comes together, showcasing your skills, creativity, and potential to stand out in your field. Here are some projects that our MSc graduates have worked on:

🔎 Bayesian inference for generalised linear mixed models

🔎 Risk modelling using expected shortfall

🔎 Hidden Markov models for financial time series

🔎 Gaussian copula regression

🔎 Kalman filter with application to financial state-space models

🔎 Model based forecasting of volatility and other risk measures

🔎 The role of climate change in altering the risk of vector-borne infections

🔎 Simultaneous inference: multiple-use calibration for infinite many future values and exact simultaneous tolerance intervals
