Mass Spectrometry and Separations Facility

The Mass Spectrometry and Separations Facility (MS&SEP) provides advanced analytical support for research and industrial applications and supports the study of biological molecules of all sizes – from small metabolites to large macromolecular complexes.

Based across the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) and the Department of Chemistry, we deliver high‑quality analysis, expert training and specialist support across a wide range of scientific disciplines.

Working with us

Led by Dr Kat Hollywood and a team of 12 technical specialists, the Mass Spectrometry and Separations Facility maintain a suite of world‑leading analytical instrumentation.

We specialise in solving complex analytical challenges and supporting researchers at every stage – from experimental design to data interpretation. We offer both service‑led analysis and collaborative project support. Users can also access training that enables them to operate instruments independently and collect their own data.

Our impact

Our projects support the MIB’s research missions by accelerating technology development, understanding biomanufacturing routes to sustainable chemicals and materials, advancing platforms for advanced therapeutics, and providing biological solutions for environmental protection. Working with MIB’s cross-disciplinary teams, we provide collaborative access, training and clear handover so partners can adopt, sustain and grow capability.
